By now you probably have heard of Phishing and Vishing. Now we have SMiShing an attack that uses SMS messages as a part of schemes to steal your identity.
One common SMiShing attack uses programs to send a large number of people SMS messages including the first 6 digits of a credit card. Typically the first 6 digits of a credit or debit card issued by a financial institution are the same. The messages include a phone number for the victim to call to verify additional account information. Once the victim calls them number, they are asked to provide their account credentials to the criminals. The credentials provided are then used to steal money from the victim’s accounts.
Because the criminals are sending a large number of SMS messages at a time, even if only one or two victims respond, the attack is still successful.
